Fantasy Football Preview: NFC North 🏈

Breaking down each NFC North team's fantasy outlook - player to target, player to avoid, and a sleeper pick for every team!

Chicago Bears

🎯 Player to Target: QB Caleb Williams

Current ADP: QB11

Walter’s Rank (PPR): QB8

Caleb Williams endured a challenging rookie season marked by coaching instability, multiple offensive coordinators, and poor pass protection. Despite these obstacles, he managed 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.

His 2025 outlook dramatically improves with Johnson's arrival. The former Lions offensive coordinator helped Jared Goff finish as a top-10 fantasy QB in three straight years, which bodes well for Williams' development. Given that the Bears also significantly upgraded their offensive line this offseason (Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, Jonah Jackson), Williams appears poised for a breakout campaign.

đŸš« Player to Avoid: WR Rome Odunze

Current ADP: WR34

Walter’s Rank (PPR): WR34

Not much went right for WR Rome Odunze in fantasy in his rookie campaign. He averaged just 8.5 PPR fantasy points per game and finished as the WR49. While he should be a better fantasy option in an upgraded offense this year, several red flags persist.

The Bears' receiving corps features significant target competition in D.J. Moore, Cole Kmet, Luther Burden III, and Colston Loveland. More concerning, Odunze struggled with separation as a rookie, ranking 103rd in win rate versus man coverage (24.2%) and 98th in route win rate (37.5%) among all WRs. Those two things may limit his fantasy upside in 2025 despite offensive improvements.

💎 Sleeper Pick: RB D’Andre Swift

Current ADP: RB24

Walter’s Rank (PPR): RB22

Chicago Bears RB D’Andre Swift is one of the biggest offseason winners. Johnson will now be calling the plays in Chicago, and the Bears really didn’t add any competition for Swift in this backfield. The team’s only RB move this offseason was selecting Kyle Monangai in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

The reunion between Johnson and Swift creates compelling fantasy value at the RB position. Johnson's knowledge of Swift's skill set from their Detroit days, paired with the veteran's fantasy consistency, makes him a solid RB2 target in drafts. The Bears RB has finished as a top-20 fantasy RB in four of his five NFL seasons.

Detroit Lions

🎯Player to Target: RB David Montgomery

Current ADP: RB24

Walter’s Rank (PPR): RB25

David Montgomery has established himself as one of fantasy football's most dependable running backs. Over his six NFL seasons, he's consistently delivered top-24 RB production, including back-to-back top-18 finishes over the past two years.

Despite losing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson this offseason, Montgomery remains positioned for another solid RB2 campaign. His double-digit touchdown production in consecutive seasons, combined with Detroit's run-heavy approach (third in team run plays per game in 2024), makes him an excellent high-floor selection at his RB24 ADP.

đŸš« Player to Avoid: TE Sam LaPorta

Current ADP: TE4

Walter’s Rank (PPR): TE5

While Sam LaPorta rebounded strongly in the second half of last season (averaging 13.8 PPR points from Week 10 onward), his early-round price tag remains too steep. His concerning 16.6% target share (TE15) and pedestrian 1.7 yards per route run (TE19) from last year might make him hard to trust on a week-to-week basis in 2025.

Sam LaPorta’s Player Profile in the WalterPicks App

With Johnson's departure this offseason, LaPorta could take a backseat in this Lions offense. His current TE4 ADP doesn't account for these legitimate concerns.

💎 Sleeper Pick: WR Jameson Williams

Current ADP: WR27

Walter’s Rank (PPR): WR26

Jameson Williams quietly emerged as a legitimate fantasy contributor in 2024, posting career-best numbers with 58 catches for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns while finishing as the WR22 in PPR formats. His explosive deep-ball ability should remain a cornerstone of Detroit's offense in 2025.

Although Johnson's departure creates some uncertainty, he ranked top-12 among all WRs in yards after the catch (447) and yards per reception (17.3) last season. That makes him a sneaky target at his WR27 ADP, especially since he averaged 16.2 PPR fantasy points per game over the final eight weeks of the 2024 season.

Green Bay Packers

🎯Player to Target: RB Josh Jacobs

Current ADP: RB10

Walter’s Rank (PPR): RB11

Josh Jacobs was one of the few workhorse backs in the NFL last season. He was one of six RBs to total at least 300 carries and one of five RBs to rush for over 1,300 yards. Those numbers helped Jacobs finish as the overall RB6 in PPR formats while averaging 17.2 fantasy points per game.

This Green Bay backfield now remains unchanged, positioning Jacobs for another heavy workload. Even accounting for potential touchdown regression from his career-high 15 rushing scores last year, his track record speaks volumes. He's finished as a top-6 fantasy RB in two of the past three seasons, making him difficult to pass up at his ADP.

đŸš« Player to Avoid: The Entire Wide Receiver Room

Green Bay's receiving corps presents a fantasy nightmare scenario. Last season's unpredictable target distribution among Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Dontayvion Wicks created weekly lineup headaches. The addition of first-round pick Matthew Golden and third-rounder Savion Williams only compounds the uncertainty.

While Watson's season-ending ACL injury temporarily removes one variable, the remaining group offers no clear hierarchy or consistent target share. The volatility makes every Packers receiver — Reed, Doubs, Wicks, Golden, and Williams — extremely unattractive in fantasy.

💎 Sleeper Pick: TE Tucker Kraft

Current ADP: TE14

Walter’s Rank (PPR): TE13

Amid Green Bay's WR chaos, Tucker Kraft emerged as Love's most reliable target in 2024. Kraft finished as the TE10 in PPR formats and ranked second in catches (50), second in receptions, and first in touchdowns (seven) on the team last season.

Tucker Kraft’s Player Profile in the WalterPicks App

Kraft's advanced metrics support his continued success in 2025, as he ranked fourth in target separation (2.44), third in fantasy points per route run (0.61), and fourth in fantasy points per target (2.33) last year. As Love's established security blanket, another top-12 TE finish appears well within reach for the ascending 24-year-old.

Minnesota Vikings

🎯Player to Target: TE T.J. Hockenson

Current ADP: TE5

Walter’s Rank (PPR): TE4

It was sort of a wash of a year for Minnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson in 2024. Hockenson missed the first two months of the season while recovering from a torn ACL, and it took him a couple of weeks to get back into a rhythm on the field. However, his previous success in Kevin O'Connell's system suggests a strong bounce-back campaign.

T.J. Hockenson’s 2023 Game Log

With another year removed from that torn ACL, Hockenson should reclaim his role as a premier fantasy tight end. His TE4 PPR fantasy finish in this same Minnesota offense in 2023 provides the blueprint, and his potential chemistry with young quarterback J.J. McCarthy as a security blanket makes him an attractive target at his TE5 ADP.

đŸš« Player to Avoid: RB Jordan Mason

Current ADP: RB31

Walter’s Rank (PPR): RB37

Despite showing promise with the San Francisco 49ers before his trade to the Vikings this offseason, Jordan Mason faces limited fantasy upside in 2025. While he'll serve as Aaron Jones' primary backup, his role projects as a high-end handcuff rather than a standalone fantasy contributor.

Mason's lack of receiving involvement (11 catches for 91 yards across 12 games last year) creates a concerning floor. With Jones expected to dominate backfield touches, Mason's current ADP appears inflated for his likely production.

💎 Sleeper Pick: QB J.J. McCarthy

Current ADP: QB18

Walter’s Rank (PPR): QB18

After missing his rookie season due to a meniscus injury, McCarthy finally gets his opportunity as Minnesota's starter following Sam Darnold's departure. That alone makes him an intriguing target in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

We all know the fantasy success that QBs have had in O’Connell’s system over the years. Kirk Cousins finished as the QB6 in 2022, and Darnold recently finished as the QB9. With elite weapons like Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, McCarthy possesses the supporting cast necessary for low-end QB1 production. Walter projects a QB10 ceiling for the Michigan product.
