Picking upsets is a crucial part of successful bracket building. Here is all of the historical upset data you need, and some key insights to keep in mind when building your bracket.
Tips for Picking Upsets
Pick around 5 No. 10-12 seeds to win in the first round - this group wins between 35-40% of round one games historically. At least one 12 or 13 seed has won a round one game every year since 2008. (2 of these teams won in the first round last season.).
Be wary of No. 2 seeds - in 22 of last 24 years at least 1 No. 2 seed has failed to make the Sweet 16.
Consider picking one No. 13 seed to win in round one - this happens about 23% of the time historically (Yale did this in 2024, none did this last year).
Pick upsets in matchups where you think neither team will win more than two games (this limits the downside of an incorrect upset pick).
Always keep the size of your pool in mind. In general it is better to pick more upsets (be aggressive) in larger pools, and fewer upsets (less risk) in smaller pools. *The WalterPicks autofill feature will automatically do this for you.
